I think it is worth pointing out that a Rhodesian
Ridgeback of today can most certainly spend the whole day facing up
to all the dangers to be encountered in our biggest Game Reserves,
yet go home and play perfectly peaceably with the children at the end
of that day. Dealing with the wild animals, whether Wildebees or
Elephant, does not mean that they can't behave themselves properly
with children in normal human society. That is what we today expect of our dogs, and that
was also the historical imperative.
If we then turn our attention to Cornelius van Rooyen and the
liondogs of Rhodesia, we are certainly into a slightly different
application. And what Cornelius sought were dogs that could go out on the hunt and survive.
In other words dogs that not only went out to hunt but actually came
back in good shape. In those days the losses to wild animals were
severe, and Cornelius discovered that those examples with ridges
survived the rigours and dangers. And did they put their teeth into
the wild animals? Well it must have happened some of the time, but
holding on to lion is worse than 'having a Tiger by the tail': they
could only bay and not bite, and that was how they were supposed to
behave.
I can only agree with Matthew Valdivia, that the Rhodesian Ridgeback
must act like a good police officer, and apply only minimum force.
When attacked by another dog they will often turn their shoulder into
the offending animal, and/or swing their side into it powerfully. So
even in times of direct threat they do not automatically resort to
their teeth as the sole retaliatory alternative.
At all times we advise everyone to avoid attack training. They may
have guarded the wagons of the trekkers hundreds of years ago, but we
see no reason to develop any violent aspect of their multifaceted
capabilities today to prove that they are a "true RR". They will
respond adequately to meet whatever threat they and/or their humans
are facing, and that automatic response has proved to be sufficient
in all cases, regardless of the actual/potential level of violence.
I trust that this answers your questions adequately. I hope that you
enjoyed Christmas and that you have an excellent New Year, all the
best, Scotty, 'let them run free'.
